Growing the sport of disc golf on BC's Sunshine Coast

Tour Championship and 2022 season wrap-up

That’s a wrap!

Our club officially wrapped up competitive play for the season this past weekend at the illustrious Tour Championship season finale. We crowned season champions, we gave away some cool prizes and we all left with the appreciation that this guy Anthony is a pretty good frisbee golfer.

Recreational Division

It only took Toby Johnson three events to run away with the 2022 Rec Division Championship, capping things off with a dominant victory this past weekend.

Johnson absolutely crushed the field at the Tour Championship, shooting a whopping 13 strokes clear of his next competitor Dee Brejak.

Johnson came to play at Major tournaments this season, winning both the Summer Classic and the Tour Championship, while finishing 2nd to Brejak at The Painter’s Open. An outstanding season for the club newcomer! Congrats, Toby!

Brejak is your second place divisional winner with Ryan Chilibeck in third place. Aaron Walker got all the cheers on game day for a third place finish, but that was due to some poor math from now disgraced SC/DC Statistician Paul Rietze. Walker was erroneously given points for a second place tie with Brejak, but he actually finished 4th place behind Brejak (2nd) and Lisa Furfaro (3rd). Shout out to Lisa for not only spotting this error, but for also threatening my life if I didn’t let you all know in this post.

Much respect to all our competitors in Rec this season. It’s not easy to get out and compete in something that you’re relatively new at and it takes guts to put yourself out there for everyone to see.

I’m hopeful that we can grow this division even more next season by providing more score-able layouts for beginners and by coming up with creative ways to introduce more more casual players into our league.

Intermediate Division

Whether it’s on stage or on the course Club President Jeff Doran knows how to put on one Hell of an encore.

The punk rock President himself wrapped his season up with a second Major victory at the Tour Championship and is now officially your 2022 Intermediate Division champion. Doran clutched up at Majors this season winning both the Tour Championship and The Painter’s Open en route to a divisional championship.

Doran held off Marcus Brejak by just a stroke on Sunday to pull out the victory and edged out both David Lacroix and Chris Hanchar in the divisional standings. In fact, Lacroix and Hanchar both tied the season with 82 points in second place. A remarkable season for both of these rookies, but it was in fact Lacroix who earned himself Rookie of the Year honors in a tiebreaker over Hanchar. While the pair had an even amount of victories, Lacroix edged out Hanchar in podium finishes to win the tiebreaker.

The Intermediate Division was once again our biggest division and provided the biggest variance amongst top competitors.

Shout out to Doran for already announcing his promotion to the Advanced Division and a kudos to all those who elect to join him next season! The league desperately needs some fresh blood in Advanced, so don’t be shy!

Advanced Division

Big dumb idiot Jordan Newman earned himself a third victory and second Major victory on the season to secure himself 2022 Advanced Division Champion honours.

Newman bookended a nearly perfect season with a win at the Tour Championship to go along with his victories at The Painter’s Open and The Tour Tee-Off. His scorecard for the season reads: Three wins, one 2nd place. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Club VP and all around good guy Trevor Connors takes 2nd place in the division with five 2nd place finishes on the season along with a victory at The Tapworks Open. Not bad either… but not good enough! Connors was also awarded for his dedication to the club with the first annual Whitler Award which he shares with Sunshine Coast disc golf pioneer Matthew Kliewer. Number 1 tag and Number 1 in our hearts Callum McDonald claims third place in the division with two podium finishes on the season. Prediction: McDonald, the 2021 Intermediate Division champion, will be one to watch at the top of the 2023 Advanced Division standings.

Despite having a limited field, the Advanced Division saw four of its six competitors earn a victory this season (sorry, Callum and Gerry!). I’m hopeful that next season though we see a much larger field in this division.

On a personal note, I want to thank all of these gentlemen for being such good competitors this past season. I enjoyed playing with each of you and I always felt like we sincerely brought out the best in each other. Well done, boys.

Open Division

The Pride of Saskatoon, the Great Plains Punisher, the Wheat King himself Anthony Paul adds yet another title to his marquee: 2022 Open Division Champion.

Paul bested Matthew Kliewer, your 2022 President’s Award winner, by a single stroke this past weekend to earn himself a third victory and second Major victory this season and secure himself a divisional championship over the late charging Dean Miles.

Shout out to both Paul and Miles for giving the rest of us bums something to aspire to. But really… you guys are so good that you should be ashamed for not giving anyone else a sniff of top spot.

The Trail Bay Bomber Josh Romer vaults himself into 3rd spot on the divisional standings with an impressive end to his campaign. Romer narrowly edged out Honza Tvaruzek for the final podium spot in a very tight race.

While Paul made a big splash during his first season on the Coast, he’ll no doubt have a target on his back in 2023. Miles isn’t one to shy away from a challenge and the likes of Romer, Kliewer and Tvaruzek aren’t likely to rest on their laurels. There are also rumors of a former Open Division champion returning to his old stomping grounds in 2023…
