Growing the sport of disc golf on BC's Sunshine Coast

About

What is disc golf, where can I play, who is the Sunshine Coast Disc Golf Association (SCDGA) and what’s the deal with the SC/DC (Sunshine Coast DiscGolf Club)?

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf, also called frisbee golf, is an outdoor sport with rules similar to traditional golf in that the player with the fewest shots (throws) wins the game. In disc golf, competitors throw a disc (frisbee) around trees, shrubs and other natural objects on their way to a basket target.

Courses on the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is home to three disc golf courses, each with their own unique qualities.

Shirley Macey Park

On the Sunshine Coast, we have one public 9 hole course at Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons available to play year-round. The course is managed jointly in a stewardship partnership between the SCDGA and the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD). The course is groomed and maintained by both SCRD Parks staff and SCDGA volunteers.

Camp Byng

Further up the Coast there is an 18 hole course at Camp Byng on private land owned by The Boy Scouts of Canada. The course is open for public play, so long as there are no Scouts events scheduled. Please check the course’s UDisc listing for notice of closures.

Pender Harbour Golf Course

Even further up the Coast, there is an 18 hole course at Pender Harbour Golf Course in Garden Bay. Disc golfers play alongside the traditional 9 hole golf course. Green fees are approximately $16 for 18 holes or approximately $27 with cart rental. Tee-times must be booked by calling the Pro Shop at (604) 883-9541.

Who is the SCDGA?

The SCDGA is a non-profit group whose mandate is to grow the sport of disc golf on the Sunshine Coast through public outreach and the creation of new public courses.

Board Members

President: Trevor Connors

Vice President: Denny Nordli

Treasurer: Kelsey Oxley

Members at large: Jeff Doran, Matthew Kliewer, Richard Daubin, Paul Rietze, Andrew Oxley, Jordan Newman and Darin Brose.

What is the SC/DC?

This is a question we get often… what’s the difference between the SCDGA and the SC/DC (Sunshine Coast Disc Club)?

Put simply, the SCDGA is a non-profit organization with a clear mandate to improve course conditions and create new public courses on the Sunshine Coast.

The SC/DC however is a group of disc golfers whose only mandate is to get out and play disc golf while having a blast doing it. The SCDGA board members are all SC/DC club members and both the Association and the Club work together to coordinate events like tournaments and weekly club rounds.
